Roots (TV Guide - January 22 - 28, 1977)

Haley's book largely relied on his family's oral tradition. When what documentary evidence he did find contradicted that tradition, he ignored it in favor of his family's account. Haley himself characterized his book as "faction" - fiction based on fact. The historical record, however, contradicts the entire family lineage given in Haley's book for the period prior to the Civil War. Even the "griot" mentioned here was found by later researchers to not even be a griot. His fellow villagers did not accept him as such and he was unable to repeat to other researchers the same details he told Haley. Most likely he was just someone who heard Haley recount his family story and simply told him what he wanted to hear.
